Ethnic Diversity Remains Scarce in Academic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Underrepresented Minority Medical Students

Tackling this and other disparities related to Plastic & Reconstructive surgery is fundamental to the mission of the Garnes Society. Underrepresentation In Residents, Faculty, And Physicians

According to data from the Association of American Medical Colleges, Latinx and African-Americans are severely underrepresented as plastic surgery residents & fellows, tenured faculty and the overall makeup of practicing plastic surgeons. Tackling this and other disparities related to plastic & reconstructive surgery is fundamental to the mission of the Garnes Society. Original content of this post was published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery by our cofounder Dr. Paris Butler and others in 2009.

According to 2006 data from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), African-American and Latinx physicians were severely under-represented across all specialties including family medicine, pediatrics, ob/gyn, anesthesiology, and surgery and its subspecialties. This disparity was perhaps most glaring for African-Americans in #plasticsurgery. While we accounted for 12.3% of the U.S. population, we only represented 1.4% of plastic surgery faculty.
